Undoing White Supremacy Austin (UWSA) was formed in response to a directive from the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond‘s original founder, Ron Chisom, to white people: get together amongst yourselves and organize for racial justice! Our sister communities in New Orleans, in PISAB Northeast, and PISAB Northwest organize under the name European Dissent: white folks who dissent from the oppression of racism.
UWSA’s first meeting was November 18, 2014. Eight white folks who’d attended the PISAB Undoing Racism workshop earlier that month met and chose the name AWARE: Austin White Activists for Racial Equity. We’ve changed our name, but not our vision of a community where how we’ve been racialized doesn’t predict our education, our income, our maternal outcomes, or when we die. UWSA is an entirely volunteer organization and a project of the nonprofit, Alliance of Community Trainers, Inc.
